Si on ne peut, on continuera de construire des adultes is a video essay arguing for the dissemination of open spaces for conversation in our school system.

In opposition to the public debates that heavily rely on pragmatism, the video piece develops an intuition stating that our collective relationship to education is altered by a discomfort we feel towards democracy. Created during an artist residency in Switzerland, the piece was inspired by the omnipresence of the concept of dictatorship in day-to-day conversations since Swiss political realm is shaped by the memories of neighbouring countries’ authoritarian regimes.

My voice narrates my thought process to the viewer, referring to the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu, Amin Maalouf, Jürgen Habermas, and Emmanuel Kant. The video’s six scenes present different gestures leading to the transformation of a school notebook into an artist book. The ambient noise recorded in schools, segmented to create repetitive rhythms, and the close-ups on repetitive gestures aspire to put the spectator in an almost meditative state, rendering him or her more receptive to the ideas being shared.
